Peterborough Jazz Club: Paul Booth & James Copus Quintet
Sat 19 OctPaul Booth & James Copus Quintet
This powerhouse quintet combines wonderful melodies with virtuosic improvising, featuring a front line of two of the most exciting musicians on the UK jazz scene. Paul Booth is an acclaimed, prize-winning saxophonist and has continually refined and expanded his talents as a solo artist, composer and bandleader, as well as establishing an elite reputation as a first call sideman for major contemporary music artists such as Jamiroquari, Chaka Khan and Steve Winwood, amongst many others. In 1993, at the age of 16, Paul became the youngest student on a degree course at the Royal Academy of Music and while still at the Academy he won the Best Modern Jazz Player award in the Young Jazz Player of the Year competition. One of the judges at this was Ronnie Scott, who likened Paul’s playing to that of the late Tubby Hayes. Paul is currently one of the most highly rated saxophonists of his generation and has released 7 highly acclaimed albums as leader. James Copus is an award winning jazz trumpeter who has established himself as one of the most exciting musicians on the London jazz scene.
His unique artistic flair, technique and tone has rewarded him with a breadth of experience, leading his own band which has headlined at Ronnie Scott’s, as well as forming this superb quintet with Paul Booth and also being first choice for many leading musicians on the scene. Along with a great rhythm section, led by the fabulous pianist Tom Cawley, this concert will deliver swinging and dynamic music from start to finish.
