Sat 15 MarTim Lapthorn (piano), Paul Booth (tenor saxophone), Steve Fishwick (trumpet), Arnie Somogyi (double bass), Matt Skelton (drums).
We are thrilled to introduce this exciting new ensemble, led by the brilliant pianist Tim Lapthorn. Tim has formed a star-studded quintet to take us on a journey through the vibrant and diverse world of Latin American music. This genre, with its rich tapestry of sounds, blends indigenous, European, and African influences, and has captivated audiences worldwide for centuries. From salsa and merengue to cumbia and bachata, Latin music continues to evolve and inspire listeners around the globe.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Brazil gave birth to the relaxed, samba-infused style known as bossa nova. This movement produced timeless classics that have since become jazz standards, with jazz legends such as Stan Getz, Hank Mobley, and Dave Brubeck incorporating bossa nova into their repertoires. One of the genre’s defining moments was the 1964 album Getz/Gilberto, featuring Stan Getz and singer Astrud Gilberto, which remains a masterpiece to this day.
At the helm of this new ensemble is Tim Lapthorn, a highly gifted and expressive jazz pianist, widely regarded as one of the finest talents on the British scene. His bluesy, lyrical sound sets him apart from his peers, and his unique style reflects his deep passion for harmony. Tim has recorded four albums and toured internationally, performing at iconic venues like Copenhagen’s JazzHouse, Budapest Jazz Club, and London’s Ronnie Scott’s. As a sideman, he has played with jazz greats such as Branford Marsalis, Chris Potter, and Ron Carter.
Joining Tim is tenor saxophonist Paul Booth, an acclaimed, award-winning musician and composer. Paul has honed his skills as both a soloist and bandleader, and he has a long history with Colombian percussionist Roberto Pla, performing in his Latin Jazz Ensemble. In addition to his jazz career, Paul has toured and recorded with some of the world’s biggest stars, including The Eagles, Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, Carlos Santana, Van Morrison, Chaka Khan, Kylie Minogue, Jamiroquai, Gregory Porter, and Barry Manilow—quite a roster!
On trumpet is Steve Fishwick, one of the finest jazz trumpeters to emerge from the UK. Known for his flawless technique and harmonically rich improvisations, Steve is gaining a global reputation. He has played with leading UK jazz figures such as Sir John Dankworth, the BBC Big Band, and Stan Tracey, as well as with American legends including Ron Carter, Jimmy Heath, Scott Hamilton, and Herb Geller. His musical pedigree is truly impressive.
Rounding out the quintet are two of the finest musicians on their respective instruments: Arnie Somogyi on double bass and Matt Skelton on drums. Together, this remarkable ensemble brings a dynamic and thrilling interpretation of Latin jazz to life.
