Based on the novel by Elizabeth Gaskell, Laura Turner’s adaptation brings to life the rural village with its unique social structure.  It is a gentle story of friendship and mutual support in a close community whose residents are predominantly female.   

Meet Miss Matty, Miss Pole, Mrs Jamieson, Mary Smith and others who live by their rituals and customs, rules of etiquette and a penchant for gossip with some comic results.   

When men do make an appearance, they bring disruption and excitement to the everyday life of Cranford.  Meanwhile, the world is changing forever in the face of the industrial revolution and the village will have to change with it.
