A message from Mohit Mathur…
Growing up in India, I always believed that moving abroad would transform my life. Like many people around the world, I grew up with the idea that the West held the answer to a better future. Dial 1 for UK explores that dream and what happens when it meets reality.
The inspiration for the show came from a strange moment after I first arrived in Britain, when I received a call from “Steve” at my phone company who turned out to be Satish from India, performing Britishness down the line. That moment made me think about the thousands of people in call centres who spend their nights imagining a life in the country whose accent they imitate.
At a time when conversations around immigration are becoming increasingly polarised, I wanted to create a piece that moves beyond headlines and statistics.
Dial 1 for UK is ultimately a story about hope, empathy and the universal desire to belong somewhere.
