During the mobilisation period, further structural investigations revealed that the originally proposed roof solution could not be safely supported by the existing structure. Unfortunately, these issues could only be identified once detailed surveys had been completed.
In response, Peterborough City Council and Contractors Lindum, supported by architects and structural engineers, have developed a revised design that both removes the risk associated with RAAC and provides a robust long-term structural solution. The updated design will see the removal of RAAC risk, the installation of a new roof covering with a 20-year lifespan, and essential improvements to fire safety, heating, and ventilation.
While this additional work has extended the construction period, Landmark Theatres is assured that the Key Theatre will reopen at the beginning of May 2026.
We fully understand that this is disappointing news. Particularly as it represents a second unplanned overrun. We are deeply grateful for the patience and loyalty shown by our Key Theatre community throughout this challenging period. We are encouraged by Peterborough City Council’s continued investment in the Key Theatre, demonstrating strong and ongoing support for cultural infrastructure in the city. Thanks to this commitment, the Key Theatre will remain a vibrant, high-quality home for arts and culture for decades to come.
“Our audiences are at the heart of everything we do,” said Paul Jepson, CEO and Creative Director. “We have been humbled by the understanding and support shown throughout this process. The Council’s investment not only secures the future of the Key Theatre but also ensures we can continue bringing exceptional arts and culture to Peterborough for many years to come. Landmark Theatres is proud to play a key role in strengthening the city’s cultural landscape, and we remain committed to working alongside the Council to grow Peterborough’s cultural offer and protect its much-loved cultural assets for future generations.”
Our team is working hard to ensure that all customers holding tickets for performances scheduled between January and the end of April are contacted and offered an alternative date where possible, or a refund. We will be extending our opening hours to support customers, and we kindly ask for patience while we work through contacting those affected.
We would also like to reassure our audiences and the wider community that:
- The Studio Theatre remain open and fully operational, as the current works are limited to the main auditorium.
- The Chalkboard continues to welcome visitors, and we’re grateful for your ongoing support of this valued local business. With Christmas Afternoon Tea now being served, we encourage customers to book and support The Chalkboard during this festive period.
- Kindred Youth Theatre classes are continuing classes as usual, with all studio and rehearsal spaces unaffected by the works. We are working closely with Kindred to minimise the disruption to the scheduled performances.
- Peterborough Performing Arts will also continue to deliver their BTEC Performing arts programme at the Key Theatre without disruption.
The initial project overrun saw the relocation of our annual pantomime to our sister venue, the New Theatre. This year’s production of Jack and the Beanstalk opens at the New Theatre on 16 December, promising fantastic family entertainment throughout the festive season.
“We’re thrilled to be bringing our pantomime to the New Theatre this year,” added Jepson. “The support we’ve already seen for this production, and its move to the New Theatre, has been overwhelming, and we can’t wait to welcome families for some festive fun.”
