John "Swift Nick" Nevison (1639–1684)
A legendary highwayman who operated extensively along the Great North Road from York down to Huntingdon, which passes right through Peterborough. His gang regularly stopped and robbed wealthy travelers, often using inns in nearby towns to seek respite.
Dick Turpin (1705–1739)
Known as the “Flying Highwayman”, he terrorized the Great North Road and the broader East Midlands countryside. Local lore connects Turpin to hasty getaways in nearby villages; for example, he is reputed to have leapt from an upstairs window at The Bell Inn in Stilton, just south of Peterborough.
Ned Bonnet
A grocer from the Isle of Ely who fell on hard times, Bonnet became a feared highwayman who committed hundreds of robberies around Cambridgeshire in the early 18th century before being executed at Cambridge Castle in 1713.
